First Presbyterian Church — Local Missions

Soup Kitchen

Once a month, volunteers provide a hearty meal for those who are hungry and in need. In the winter, we provide hats, gloves, scarves to help our guests weather the New England cold weather.

USS Rhode Island

First Presbyterian members have "adopted" the crews of this Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, SSBN-740. We send Advent booklets, small Christmas gifts , and prayers throughout the year. Katie Machtley, who sponsored the launch of the USS Rhode Island in 1993, continues to foster our relationship with the vessel.

Ecumenical Events
First Presbyterian Church recently hosted joint services for five local churches at Thanksgiving and Pentecost.

Local Schools
We sponsor a special "Johnnycake" breakfast for fifth grade classes at a nearby public school.

their programs that assist those in need. We do so through our mission giving, and church members serve as volunteers to assist with the weekly Sunday soup kitchen provided by the Salvation Army and to pick up bread and pastries from local merchants for the Salvation Army’s daily bread pantry.

Angel Tree Program
First Presbyterian members purchase gifts for the children of needy families on Aquidneck Island through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The new clothing and/or toys purchased by FPC members are delivered to the Salvation Army where they are picked up by the parent for placing under the Christmas tree so that the children may feel the joy of that day.
